The annual Indiana Prairie Farmer/ CountryMark Essay contest is back. Announced in the March issue of Indiana Prairie Farmer, page 37, the deadline for entries is April 15. It's an easy date to remember since it's also the date tax forms are due.
This contest could earn money for your son, daughter, or other relative—not cost them money. CountryMark will award $500 in prize money, split between the top four winners. First place will earn some young boy or girl $250.
Susan Hayhurst, free-lance writer for Indiana Prairie Farmer, and her family selected this year's topic: Share your favorite 4-H memory. Essays should be a minimum of 250 and a maximum of 350 words.
"Everyone has a memory form a fair, a show, a project or travel related to 4-H," Hayhurst says. "We're looking forward to seeing what kind of experiences young people choose to share with us."
And so you know we're not playing favorites, the topic for 2012 has already been selected: Share your favorite experience related to FFA. Hayhurst and family figure that each topic provides plenty of fodder for young writers.
The contest is open to students ages 9 through 21. Students must do their own work. Essays will not be returned, and decisions of the judges, selected by Indiana Prairie Farmer, will be final. Indiana Prairie Farmer reserves the right to publish any and all essays submitted without further compensation.
Since this topic is easy to write about, share it with your local 4-H leader. Even younger 4-H members should have fun putting their memories on paper. Older members may have to dig a little further into their memory bank to come up with their favorite experience.
Often these experiences resulted in either learning an important lesson or developing a long-lasting relationship with a good friend, perhaps counties away. Sometimes it may involve an experience that has led to a decision on your career or your field of study after you graduate from high school.
Send entries, postmarked no later than April 15, to: Susan Hayhurst, 14477 S. Carlisle Street, Terre Haute, IN 47802. Good luck to everyone!
