If you're on your way to the Farm Progress Show today, or if you're going tomorrow, or if you're not going but know someone who is, check out the Titan Tire and FFA benefit auction. One auction will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. CDT, and the other Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. CDT. There is no auction on Thursday.
Titan tire began sponsoring the auction several years ago. It's the only auction held at the Farm Progress Show. Titan donates a large array of tires, everything from large tractor and combine tires down to tires for ATVs and perhaps even garden tractors. Titan officials make a real effort to split the quantity offered between both days so that no matter which day you are there, you have an opportunity to bid on a certain size o tire that you might be looking for.
In addition, state officers from both the Illinois and Indiana FFA comb the grounds before the show, asking other exhibitors to donate items for the auction. The last time the show was in Decatur, one of the large Kinze toys showed up on the auction block. Usually seed corn companies often donate certificates for seeds, which are then sold at auction.
A real auctioneer conducts the auction, using a bidder system. You can sign up for a bid number before the auction begins at the Titan Tire and/or FFA booths. They will be located together this year in the northeast corner of the show grounds. You need a bidder number to be able to participate in the auction.
People will be on hand to assist you if you purchase a large item, such as a big tire. You may take it with you after the auction. Arrangement scan be made to make sure you can load your purchases without great difficulty.
Check the Illinois FFA Website for more information about the auction. You ma find a partial list of items to be offered each day.The proceeds of the sale go to benefit both associations. Illinois and Indiana FFA split the proceeds, with equal totals going to both associations. That's because Indiana Prairie Farmer is a co-host for the show. Auctions were held before semi-permanent sites began. In those cases, the FFA in the home state when there was a three-way rotation was the benefactor of the sale.
