4-H Program Opportunities to Members and Adults to Travel

Poland Exchange trip open to 30 people for next summer.

If you have gray hair you may remember the IFYE programs that many 4-H'ers went on some four and five decades ago. That program no longer exists. But a new exchange program holds promise for 30 Hoosiers to visit Poland to learn about 4-H in that country next summer.

Spots are reserved for 4-H'ers and adults form both northern and southern Indiana. The idea is to give 4-H'ers a chance to explore other parts of the world. The program is called ''and my world.' Those who go will share about their experiences in 4-H in the U.S. in Indiana, and learn about how the counterpart program functions today in Poland.

The 4-H'ers selected to attend will stay with host families in Poland. They are expected to participate in 4-H activities underway in Poland during their stay in that country. The other goal, of course, is for young Hoosiers to learn about daily life in Poland, and how it compares to the daily life they enjoy in America.

Adults who go on the trip with the 4-H'ers may also stay with host families who have volunteered to be part of the program. The goal for adults while staying with a host family in Poland will be to learn about Polish culture and history. It's an education they can share when they return home to work as 4-H leaders and 4-H volunteers in this country.

There are actually two trips planned- one for those from northern Indiana and one for those living in southern Indiana. The southern Indiana trip is scheduled for June 19 to July 4, about two weeks. Anyone wanting more information or a copy of an application form for this trip should contact J.W. Fansler at Scott County Extension, 812-752-8450, or by email: [email protected].

For those in the northern half of Indiana, the trip to Poland is slated for June 25 to July 8. It is also a two-week stay. There are several possible contacts for information or applications in northern Indiana. They include: Cindy Barnett, Whitley County Extension, 260-244-7615, [email protected]; Roger Scherer, Wells County Extension, 260-824-6412, [email protected]; ┬áBarb Thuma, Allen County Extension, 260-481-6826, [email protected]; or Linda Hines, with the 4-H International Programs project. Reach her at 765- 494-8433, or [email protected].

Applications for both trips are due February 1, 2012.
